FIREWATER TENT REVIVAL

FIREWATER TENT REVIVAL

The Firewater Tent Revival comes from a small fishing village, located just outside of Jacksonville Florida known as Mayport. Not quite Bluegrass, not really Country or Rock, this “High-Energy String Band” performs music that playfully entertains a crowd with storyteller-style lyrics and bluegrass instrumentation. Done "jam band" style with a rock and roll attitude, Firewater simply makes you want to dance. They find themselves in high demand with a schedule filling out fast, and have become staple fixtures at live-music venues throughout Jacksonville such as Fly's Tie Irish Pub and Bold City Brewery.

The group recorded their first EP "Sinkin' Boat" in February 2015. Two months later in April, Firewater played their way into the hearts of Jacksonville's public, where they were voted to win 3rd place in the popular crowd funding festival "One Spark."

"When it ain't fun to do anymore, it's over" is the perspective that the band maintains, and since 2010, fun is exactly what it's been. The typical fan finds themselves staying an extra hour or 2 and ordering another round because "Firewater is playing til close!"

Genres: Indie, Folk, Country, Introspective, Lyrical

Recently released Thunder and Rain, featuring legendary cellist, Dave Eggar, is on Spotify, Pandora and Itunes. Look for performances on 89.9 WJCT, Jacksonville, Florida and 93.1 WLNR, Miami-Ft. Lauderdale as well rotations on CMR Europe and WWOZ.

Ample Angst is the most recent musical project of songwriter, Mike Bernos, who after the successful creation of the blues-rock driven, Spice and the Po Boys, reconnects with his introspective folk roots. To best express his lyrically influenced songs, he brought together vocalist, Olivia Chernyshev, the velvet-voiced veteran of Jacksonville's musical theater scene, young violinist Joseph Henderson, and multi-instrumentalist and co-collaborator of several years, Cyrus Quaranta. The chemistry has produced rich musical textures and compelling harmonies between the crystal-clear mezzo-soprano of Chernyshev and the John-legend tinged voice of Quaranta.Bernos displays a broad musical range and a lithe lyrical touch with the four songs he penned for the EP, Thunder and Rain. Between the elegiac ballad, "Let Her Go" and bluesy shuffle, "Neon Love," there is some New Orleans honky-tonk and folk-gospel, which, go straight to Bernos's Catholic and indulgent roots curated in that great musical city. The band caught the attention of legendary studio and performing cellist, Dave Eggar, who is featured on the EP.

Folk Is People

Folk is People is a Jacksonville-based indie folk band led by singer-songwriter, Stacey Bennett. Their music is eloquently crafted into a melodic blend of stringed and percussive instruments backed by Bennett’s driving voice. Each song is a story meticulously written into verse and chorus.

Folk is People came to life in 2012 as a folk duo with members, Stacey Bennett and Rick Grice. After releasing an EP and touring, the pair took on other endeavors and the project was halted with no revival date in sight. Bennett resurrected the project in 2015 after becoming what she describes as “incessantly mundane” and enlisted Grice to engineer and produce the new album. Folk is People’s first full-length album, The Devil Always Comes, was released October 25, 2016. The record sounds like indie rock married a folk song and started a pop band. It is a conceptual piece depicting the inner dissonance experienced when we reflect on and attempt to reconcile misdeeds in the present pursuit of virtue.

Folk is People’s eclectic music video for “Bury Me in Virginia” premiered in September exclusively on Homoground and their video for "Crocodile" is being released in May.

Folk is People recently returned home from SxSW after playing RedGorilla showcases and is preparing for a summer tour spanning the east coast in support of their new album, The Devil Always Comes. Download it here

"Folk Is People is singer/songwriter Stacey Bennett’s full-time gig, and she’s killing it. On her new album, The Devil Always Comes, there’s a raw clarity in her voice, with a bit of a yodel here and a growl there, that carries over some pristine indie folk pop. It’s loud, jangly, hopeful music, even when it’s sad and angry." -Meeghan Kane, Auntie Bellum Magazine

"I almost don’t know what to do with Folk is People other than to just enjoy the music. The whole damn thing is just so good I can’t really put it into words. The vocal is clear and captivating, the melody reminds me of a sort of timeless rock sound, yet the composition feels really fresh. The production is great, the lyrics are ponderously complex, and the entire production reminds me something my especially trendy friends would listen to at the coffeeshop." -Ear to the Ground

“catchy, and thorny, full of propulsive, breakneck folk songs played with a propulsive buzz, imbued with Bennett’s powerful voice.” -Nick McGregor, Folio Weekly

Ben Prestage

http://www.benprestagemusic.com/

Ben Prestage’s musical background began before he was born... even before his parents were born. Ben’s great-grandmother was a Vaudeville musican who toured with Al Jolson and also participated in medicine shows. Her daughter was a Boogie-Woogie pianist and painter who used to play for Ben when he was coming up. On the other side of the family tree, his grandfather, who was a Mississippi sharecropper turned Ben onto the sounds and culture of Mississippi and Blues in general. “When my father was growing up in Mississippi,” states Ben, “ they never had running water and the only electricity was one light bulb that hung from the ceiling, but they had it better than some of their neighbors, because they didn’t have dirt floors. I grew up in rural Florida, on a 14-mile-long dirt road, near the headwaters of the Everglades. It was 7 miles either direction to the nearest paved road, and when you got to pavement, you still weren't near a town. It was panther, gator, and cottonmouth country. Out there, there was only one kind of music in the house. Whether it was being played on an instrument, or on a recording, it was Blues.

“One day though, in my early teens, I went to help a neighbor build a chicken-coop on his property. When we went inside to eat lunch, I asked him about a banjo I saw in the corner. He picked it up and I heard Bluegrass music for the first time. He was from a musical family and learned old-time banjo from his father from the South Ohio/North Kentucky hills. He lived half a mile away, but it was so quiet out there, you could hear that banjo all the way to my house, if he was on his porch and I was on mine.. He made homemede wine with my dad and when he’d come over, he’d bring his banjo and show me how to pick with my fingers instead of a plectrum.”

Later while living in Memphis, Prestage became a busker (street performer) on historic Beale Street. This is where he perfected his drum-kit. "I played out there a few times with nothing but a guitar and my voice. Once people heard me they liked it, but it was hard to get them on my side of the street with all the other music going on down there. There were some other guys out there who played drums with their feet, and they always got people's attention. I started playing drums with my feet as an attention grabber but soon found out that the drums played with foot pedals actually enhaced my music dramatically. Not only were people listening and buyin' discs, they were now dancing and hollerin' to boot. Now I am to the point where, if you close your eyes, you would think there was a professional drummer with a full-size drumkit behind me. I learned alot from the guys I shared the street with, including John Lowe, (inventor of the Lowebow, a type of diddley-bow that I play), Robert Belfour, and Richard Johnston."

Ben returned to Memphis over the next few years for the International Blues Challenge (the world's largest gathering of Blues musicians) and within three consecutive years took he 4th, 3rd, and 2nd place. He is also the only two-time recipient of the Lyon/Pitchford Award for "Best Diddley-Bow Player." Ben's interesting approach to instrumentation, (fingerstyle guitar, harmonica, banjo, lap-steel, fiddle, resonator guitar, foot-drums, vocals, and his award-winning original songwriting (recipient of "The Most Unique Performer" at "The Song- writers' Showcase of America") has earned him invitations to perform across North America, Europe, and as far as North Africa. All awards aside, he has proven himself, through his live performances, to be the future of American Blues, Roots Music, Americana and is one of today’s most talented outsider artists.
